There are several things that one can do help speed up hair growth, and these tips will also help strengthen strands and benefit the scalp:
1. Perform a daily scalp massage - this works best when performed on dry hair. Massage clean, dry fingertips on scalp in either a circular or vertical motion, as if washing hair. Do not use fingernails to avoid scratching the scalp and breaking the roots. This massage will help to increase blood flow to the scalp, which helps with hair cell turnover. Also, a scalp massage loosens up dead skin cells and oils that can clog the follicles and slow down growth. For those who are concerned about fine, thinning hair, perform the scalp massage while shampooing.
2. Take a daily collagen supplement - collagen is the most abundant protein in the body, but production starts to diminish (for both males and females) at age 25 at a rate of 1% per year. A collagen supplement will not only help strengthen existing strands but is synergistic - collagen supplements will help with skin, nails, joints, gums and blood vessels.
3. If using hot styling tools, such as blow-dryers and flat irons, use a weekly hair mask to help repair lost moisture in the strands. An ideal treatment is using a pre-shampoo hair and scalp oil. Make sure to choose a formual with skin-friendly oils, such as argan, grapeseed, avocado, sesame, camellia or jojoba. For finer, thinner hair, leave oil ni 20 minutes before shampooing out, and for thicker, drier, more chemically processed hair, leave the oil in overnight and shampoo and condition as usual in the morning. The oil will help to pH balance the scalp as well as repair strands.
4. It's true when hairdressers advice getting a trim every 6-8 weeks - this gets rid of split ends and makes hair look and feel softer.
5. Another tip for women: try sleeping with hair wrapped in a slightly-tight ponytail or bun. This action has been shown to help speed up hair growth (for some!)
